Victoria News - HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Results from Esquimalt hosted novice tournament
ED ASHMORE HOSTS ANOTHER TOURNAMENT
Ed Asmore, a long serving member of amateur wrestling was quoted in the Victoria News and Saanich News, as follows:
"I'm so pleased. We has administrators show up to support us -
it just shows what the community can do when (it) gets behind something."
ASHMORE is the force behind the Victoria Bulldogs Wrestling team.
Other local school clubs that participated were Reynolds and Esquimalt
High Schools. Asmore is also a former teacher at S J Willis School and in his younger days, Ashmore was involved in boxing among other sports.

BC BOXING OFFICIALS - yesterday and today
THE UNSUNG HEROES: by brian zelley

The success of any organization requires the dedication of many volunteers
...In recognition of the dedication and distinguished service of the officials
to the success ...this page is dedicated to the ring officials.
Now that was in 1985 so who were some of the past officials scattered
throughout the towns of British Columbia.
From my memory bank back to the sixties, one of the earliest names
that I remember was Victoria based referee JACK O'HANDLEY
but along the way there would be many others. One of the first
Vancouver based officials was DAVE BROWN
(of interest, in 1972, Dave would referee the
MUHAMMAD ALI - GEORGE CHUVALO bout held in Vancouver.
From my experience in the Eighties, five key names were
Bert Lowes, Fred Fuller, Howard Curling, Rick Brough and Ron Whalley,
but how could we not mention the many others
VIC MURDOCH, RUDY BIANCO, IAN GIBSON, SID KNOPP,
JACK MELLOR, JOE PRESTON, ALAN STOCKDALE and EARL VANCE.
but then back to the Fifties and remember
DUSTY MAIR, BOB EDWARDS,and LEN LIGHTFOOT.
1984 INTERMEDIATE - SENIOR OPEN GOLDEN GLOVES:
For the success of any tournment there needs to be more officials
than just referees and judges.

BC BOXING GOLDEN BOYS
THE BC GOLDEN BOYS: by brian zelley
The Golden Gloves in British Columbia began in 1939 and
one boxer is selected as the GOLDEN BOY.
From 1939 - PHIL VICKERY to 2010 DYLAN BISHOP, there have
been an interesting group including USA boxers RAY LAMPKIN
and NEIL KNIGHT.
Multi-winners:
a select few have earned the distinction of being
a multi winner including
DICK FINDLAY, JAMIE OLLENBERGER and ALLAN BAYNE.
The 1945 Golden Boy was CHESTER ORR and in 1955 it was TRENT KETCHESON.
Some of the others were norm delaire, eddie haddad, barnie grace,
don gehring, mickey mazur, jack strazza, kalman santosi, david ius,
derrick hoyt, ron paskie,wesley sunshine, jim worral, troy nelson,
kevin reynolds, brennan lowrie and matt bulteel.
1968 - a near DICK FINDLAY hat trick, but at the end of
the tournament Dick was golden boy runner-up while
Portland boxer Ray Lampkin was the
winner and golden boy after his finals victory over
Vancouver's hometown east end boxer WAYNE BOYCE.

- but it all came down to either Findlay or Ray Lampkin...
...It was LAMPKIN, the quick and tough featherweight
from Portland's Knott Street, who knocked Wayne Boyce
flat on his face with a left hook and right cross, then
blasted him with sizzling jabs and hooks

Dylan Bishop earned the award based on his victoria over
JORDAN BAIRD of Olson's Gym. Bishop is a member of
the Maple Ridge Boxing Club.

ALBERTA AMATEUR BOXING
BOXING in ALBERTA: by brian zelley
Amateur boxing in Alberta is organized and administrated through - Boxing Alberta
an arm of BOXING CANADA. Some of the key names connected to Boxing Albeerta
include: Jim Titley, David Moreau, Ginnie Brown, Kerry Fahlman, Roland Labbe
and Denis Belair.
Some of the clubs and coaches or club officials include:
Spruce Grove, Red Deer Sweet Science, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge
Boxing Club, The Force in Camrose, and the West Edmonton Knights.
Some of the club reps are Doug Bolianatz, Stuart McGrandle,
Rob Carswell and Kevin McDermott.
A few of the boxers that competed in the 2010 Alberta Provincials
included such boxers as Darren Orubar of Calgary Boxing Club
and Norman Bradford of the Cougar Boxing Club, Cam O'Connell
of Red Deer, and Eric Taylor of the Avenue Boxing Club.
Flashbacks:
It has an interesting past including former boxers AL FORD, BILLY MCCRANDLE
RICK DUFF and many more. Then there is Scotty Olson. a member of the 1988 Canadian Olympic Boxing Team.
