When the news media of a local host club ignores the other clubs in a story about
a Provincial tournament that is not good reporting.

THE DERRICK HOYT BOXING STORY

DERRICK HOYT: PRIDE OF CRANBROOK
(  Golden Boy and Canadian Champion)
 By:  brian zelley

Introduction
Looking back through the years, I remember watching Derrick
in two of his bouts with Jamie Ollenberger, they were
slam bang affairs in Victoria and Vancouver, BC in the late Seventies.
Fast forward to April 2011 and I was standing in the ring with
Derrick, Bob Pegues, Les Vegas and others at the 2010
BC Golden Gloves in which Derrick was serving as an official
while Pegues and Vegas were two of the many coaches that
were there for the tournament hosted by the Capital City
Boxing Club.  Between those exciting bouts in the Seventies
and Eighties and his role in the Golden Gloves, Derrick also
served as a boxing coach and was part of the BC Team in a
Canada Games which had the likes of Canadian Champion
Ken Lally on the team.

Recently,  DERRICK HOYT has been nominated for induction into
the BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME
- based on his boxing performance coupled with his term as
a coach and an official, Derrick has the Right Stuff to be inducted.

AMATEUR BOXING - THE BOXER

One of the many highlights was Derrick twice winning a senior
national boxing championship in 1978 and 1979.

DERRICK HOHT - BOXING COACH

In the 2000 plus period Derrick served as a coach with the SOOKE BOXING CLUB

STANLEY F. SMITH: By Brian Zelley

In reviewing the history of amateur boxing, for many many decades
one name that can be connected to the "GO TO" tag is the one they
call Stanley F. Smith or to many "Stan the Man".

When it comes time to recognize others, or support others for an award
"who are you gong to call".  Well in Greater Vancouver and the
Lower Mainland. the first name on the call list would be "Stan the Man"
to get things done.   From those early years at the East Vancouver Optimists
boxing club at the Fraserview Boy's Club to his involvement at the 1984
Junior Nationals and Olympic box-offs, it was always Stan that would be
in the front of another work detail, and during his days with the
AAU of Canada or the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Association,
Stan was always ready to supply a letter to support someone else
get recognition or an award.

Recent Nomination - DERRICK HOYT, The Pride of Cranbrook.
